Assalamualaikum w.b.t...

I want to give my opinions on how I have learnt Macbeth from this class... I start from zero... I only knew that Macbeth is a masterpiece of Shakespeare... I still remember when the first time you gave questions on Macbeth, I just wrote anything that came to my mind... but through some class discussions we have done together, finally I managed to understand what the story is all about...
I personally really like the way you made the discussion with us... you went through story line by line to make sure we understand it...you even assigned us to do the video and you showed us some videos too... I love the way you guide us in understanding the story... I love the way you give us the opportunity to express our own interpretations and thoughts... I love the way you let us explore thing using technology and outdoor activities... and now... though I haven’t finish my reading yet... I still could comprehend the story and even could share my opinion about it...
And the idea of giving us some questions on Macbeth is good to attract students like me to the story... I don’t understand what the story but when you do that I have to admit that I feel  a bit anxious to know about the story...at first I even thought that Macbeth is a name of a woman...and I thought that Lady Macbeth and Macbeth is actually the same person...but now, Alhamdulillah I knew the story already... thank you so much, miss dzeelfa..=)

Assalamualaikum w.b.t...
Ok... Now... We move on to the next part...hehehe.. Are u ready... ? =b... ok.. This time around i want to put my attention on act 2, scene 3... I was searching for the interesting scenes, and I found  that this scene is very attractive to me... in this scene, we were being exposed to the fact that Duncan’s sons are trying to escape from Scotland after the murder...Malcolm is going to England while Donalbain is heading to Ireland to safe their own life.
When I knew this in our class discussion previously, one thing straight away pop up in my mind is the history our Kesultanan Melayu Melaka... what had happened in Macbeth is quite similar to what had happened in the history of Kesultanan Melayu Melaka in 1511... As far as what i still remembered, when Melaka was under Sultan Mahmud’s rules, it was being attacked by the Portuguese. Sultan Mahmud ran away to Kampar, while his sons Sultan Muzaffar I and Sultan Alauddin Riayat Syah II were also escaping from Melaka to safe their life... Sultan Muzaffar went to Perak meanwhile his brother, Sultan Alaudin went to Johor to start a new life and settle down there... what happed to Malcolm and Donalbain is quite similar with our Melayu Malaka’s history...*please correct me if I’m wrong”... the only different part that I’ve detected  here is Malcolm and Donalbain escaped because of their father is being killed, but Sultan Muzaffar and Sultan Alauddin escaped because their father’s territory was being attacked by the Portuguese... oh..i was referring to this link as i’m doing this entry :

 In this scene, there was meaning words from Donaldbain to his brother...

“To Ireland, I: Our separated fortune Shall keep us both the safer: Where we are, there’s daggers in men’s smiles; The near in blood, The nearer bloody.”

What can i interpret here is even though the person is our close relatives, but that doesn’t guarantee that he/she will not do bad thing to us... the close we are, the danger it will be... because normally the people that close to us, that we trust the most ,will be the traitor. 





So... Moral of the story... beware people... =)

assalamualaikum and good evening guys...
 
Of course there are lots of differences in making the first and the second video... to be frank; i enjoy doing the second video more than the first one...for the first video, since have to act as same as what is written in the book, the actors need to use those tongue twister words to communicate with each other... we really need to put a lot of efforts for the first video where some of the actors even have to memorize the “bombastic” words... and then, every scene need to be taken for many times because sometimes the actors forgot their words... luckily, our group we have Zulaikha and Alex... both of them managed to memorize their part very well.. oh ya.. For the first video it is quite difficult because we only have little prior knowledge about the play... I don’t know about other, but me myself, I feel so hard to understand the words used in the play...
But then, when it comes to the second video, I feel immensely relieved compare to the first one. There are lot of factors contribute to that feeling actually where, in this stage, for the second video, we have got much more prior knowledge about the story through some discussion that we have done. Secondly, the second video is more to our interpretations of the story...we may act differently from the original storyline as long as the idea is there... but, the most important factor that help in making the second video way easy than the first video is the language that we used, which is the language that we are so familiar with...
For the second video, I was assigned to be in the group of the Pantai Timur girls’ group... it is not difficult to work with them because I already familiar with their dialect... i feel happy to be in the same group with the pantai timur girls because this group is the only group that have the variety dialects... Nadiya and Nik were using the Kelantanese dialect, Zulaikha, Zara and Fatin were using their Terengganu dialect and I was using my Kedahan dialect...  before we make the recording work, we practiced our own part first... all of us were laughing like crazy when we practiced the dialogue on our own dialect... i still remember i cannot look at Zulaikha’s face... because i cannot stand hearing her funny dialect with her poker face... so do the others.. We were laughing at each other non-stop that night.... but that was an awesome experiences i ever had with them...and to be honest, i was happy to see Nadiya in a very confident way, acted out her part as Macbeth...=)

My Personal Growth (ENTRY 11)

Things gained by evil do not last forever. Queen Ravenna gains her power through dark magic is at last defeated by Snow White who uses her pure and sincere heart to gain trust. Macbeth and Lady Macbeth lose their life for the name of power. Is it worth? Sincerity is the key. "No matter what you do, do it sincerely. Rewards will come eventually." This is what I always believe. Those characters want to gain power in a rush, greed becomes their master and leads them to evil. Greed is in everyone of us, but whether to let him dictates our actions is really up to us. In the process of learning about Macbeth, I do it sincerely and the reward I gain cannot be measured. Like any other literature courses, I always put my sincere thoughts. Blog writing really works for me. The book costs me RM7.90. I spent RM7.90 for a whole new insight about life. It's definitely worth my time than copying some other works. When I read my own writing, I always feel surprised with my own thoughts.

"The test of the teacher's success in teaching literature is the extent to which students carry with them beyond the classroom enjoyment and love for literature which is renewed as they continue to engage with literature throughout their lives." (Carter and Long, 1991)

I am one of them. I am one of them that enjoy and love literature beyond the classroom. So, don't stop hoping and don't stop giving! I know some lecturers have really bad impression on us and they start to give up on us. But when they give up, they give up on me too. There's always someone in the class who is eager to learn and wants to be inspired. I don't know how and why I love literature. I started it bad. I was freaking out in literature classes. All I could think of was this, "I can never score in literature." Enjoyment? Definitely, I did not enjoy. I could never relate anything. What I had it's fear. Things started to change when I had to take poem and novel classes with Puan Ju. But until today I still don't know how I survived in both classes and fell in love with literature. Blog writing was one of them. We were also asked to write essays based on the relationships of the characters or the themes in the novel. I remembered the first assignment was an essay on Great Expectation by Charled Dickens. I chose to write about father and son relationship between the characters called Magwitch and Pip. I scored well. And I started to realise probably putting my sincere thoughts worked. Again, the key word is sincerity.  I was better in poems back then and not so much into novels but good that I was exposed to both. I spent my last RM50 voucher for classic novels! And in this semester, add one more to my list, Shakespeare's work! The reason I bought Macbeth, clearly because I was asked to. I bought it with the voucher and I did not want to buy another work from Shakespeare. But now, I'm going to buy Hamlet. It's RM7.90 only!

It's weird for someone like me that wasn't exposed to any piece of literature work buying more classic works which by comparison are more difficult to comprehend than contemporary works. I only have one contemporary work which is written by Dina Zaman. It doesn't matter classic or contemporary, what I gain from literature classes is that I started reading. It's what I did not have when I first came into TESL UPM. Now, when I go into bookstores, I can't stop myself from buying books. I'm going to buy Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll too. It's potentially suitable for young adults. This is what I always have in mind after taking material class. I look for books that have potential to attract young people. Roald Dahl's classic books will be my collection too!

Passion + Sincerity + Hard work is the formula.




Fair is foul, and foul is fair (8)


In this entry, I would like to focus on this statement “Fair is foul, and foul is fair” only. This statement attracts me even though it is not so important in the story. Previously, I was not aware of this statement and just read through the text as usual. Until the day when Sam translated it into Mandarin, I read it and felt this statement has a deep meaning. It is not only a common statement! Then, I start to search for its meaning. 

            I could only find some information about this statement. I think this is not a significant line in the whole story. So only a few people discuss about it. Never mind… Let’s discuss about this statement.

            Every story has protagonist and antagonist which means there are good and bad characters in a story. When I read the statement, I wonder what it actually means. Let’s look at the first answer posted by gbeatty. She says that,

“On the most basic level, it means that things are reversed.               
To expand on that a little bit, it means two related things in general. First, it means that things that are good will become bad and things that are bad will become good. Second, it means things that look pretty ("fair") will become ugly ("foul") and things that are ugly will become beautiful.
The witches are referring first to themselves. They look ugly, but the predictions they offer are beautiful to Macbeth.
They are then referring to the entire world of the play.”

For the second response by tpritam, he says that,

“Fair and Foul are two controversial and opposite words.                 
 In this play they signify the goodness, prosperity, and the pleasing life of the chief hero Macbeth. On the other plane they signify the darker side of his would-be life.”

            Next, I shall show you comment from drrb. As I go through all the answers, I think this is the best elaboration and I love how he explained to the readers.  

“Macbeth according to Wilson Knight is a study in evil and darkness. The witches are the agents of evil and foul in the play. To the witches fair and foul are same. As Satan in Milton regarded ‘Evil’ as his ‘Good’, the witches too regarded ‘foul’ is their ‘fair’. This is riddle and the witches speak in riddles and paradoxes as they are mysterious beings of the universe. In the very opening of the play the witches appear in storm and rain and plan to have the rendezvous with Macbeth. As the three witches leave, they chant a witchy chant: "Fair is foul, and foul is fair: / Hover through the fog and filthy air" (1.1.11-12). As creatures of the night and the devil, they like whatever is "foul" and hate the "fair." So they will "hover" in the fog, and in the dust and dirt of battle, waiting for the chance to do evil. Fair is Foul and Foul is Fair" is a paradox, a statement that appears to be contradictory but actually expresses the truth. The witches are foul, but they give fair advice. Macbeth seems like a hero, but he is a plotter and dastard. It is quite interesting to note that the words of the witches will have an echo in Macbeth’s. “So foul and fair a day I have not seen”. Macbeth utters these words at the very first time he enters the stage. This shows the evil connection between Macbeth and the witches. This is suggestive of the psychological depravity of Macbeth who means that the day is foul because it is stormy and fair because he has won the battle against King of Norway and Thane of Cawdor.”

            From all of the answers, I would like to summarise what I understand about this statement. We have good and bad people in this world. Human has many different characteristics. Some are helpful, polite, selfish, heartless, kind, hardworking, loyal, disloyal, cruel and so on. Ask yourself, which is good and which is bad. Maybe you think selfish is no problem but your friends might think that selfish is bad. The words good and bad are abstract. It depends on how the person wants to interpret the meaning of the words. According to dssb, the witches regarded ‘foul’ is their ‘fair’. As for Macbeth, he changed from fair to foul after listening to the witches’ chants. To achieve his wish which is to be the King of Cawdor, he will do everything that crosses his mind without a second thought. 

            I would like to relate this situation to our current situation in this world. From daily news, I read a lot of issues which I think should not happen in this civilized era. We have brain to think before we act. But people nowadays are still the same. Behave like uncivilized moron! I read the latest news about a babysitter who whipped the babies yesterday. People will do anything for money. I can relate this useless babysitter with Lady Macbeth in Act 1 Scene 7 when she says,

“I have given suck, and know                                                              
How tender ‘tis to love the babe that milks me:                                       
I would, while it was smiling in my face,                                             
Have pluck’d my nipple from his boneless gums,                              
 And dash’d the brains out, …”

            What I am concern here is there is no more rule in this world. Oh…there are but the rules are not practised to those who have power or authority. This world is full of corruption. Good is accused as bad and bad can be good. It is like a snake can slide straightly for forever.
